The 21st-century Selfie phenomenon rapidly evolved from 2013 word of the year to a social media foundation to daily occurrence to bizarre tragedy. On the verge of its world premiere at The VORTEX in March 2020, Selfie! The Musical was forced to postpone production due to the impending pandemic.

The VORTEX and Ethos announce the release of two original music videos from Selfie! The Musical on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at 8pm CST on The VORTEX YouTube channel.
How could we have known that the “Hope and Resilience” invoked in the chorus of “Chasing Sunsets” would become the rallying cry of millions of people in a pandemic. The haunting lyrics and music of “The Truth” resonate deeply in an age of blatant lies. These two music videos were created by Rembert Block in the beautiful deserts of New Mexico during these many months of lockdown away from her home in New York. They accompany the long-awaited release of Selfie Songs, a new CD from Brooklyn-based cabaret pop band Rembert and the Basic Goodness.
These videos and the new CD provide a delightful and hopeful taste of Selfie! The Musical, which will still be produced live onstage in the future.
The Cast
Rembert & the Basic Goodness features Russell Alderson on bass and vocals, Jagoda on drums, Jeff Hudgins on saxophone, and Rembert Block, lead vocals and accordion. Brief cameo video from notorious Selfie makers, Ugly Selfie Girl, Dude Face, and Chasing Sunsets. (Allegra Jade Fox, Michael Galvan, Emily Christine Smith, and Trey Deason).
Production Team
Directed by Bonnie Cullum. Ethos Artistic Director, Chad Salvata. Video editing by Jose Lozano of Magic Spoon Productions. YouTube and Zoom production by Melissa Vogt.
Selfie! The Musical is funded and supported in part by Ethos, VORTEX Repertory Company, a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
